Lines and wrinkles in the face can make us look older than we feel. If you are one of the many individuals who are beginning to notice these pesky lines, you may be wondering the best route to correction. Botox and fillers are nonsurgical solutions to help address lines and wrinkles, however, they differ in many ways. Read on to learn more about these options and which one is right for you.

Botox

Botox is an injectable treatment that is made up of botulinum toxin type A. Throughout our lives, we make facial expressions, and use muscles to make these expressions. Botox blocks the nerve signals that cause these facial muscles to contract, ultimately preventing lines from forming. This treatment is most commonly used to treat horizontal forehead lines, “11” lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet. Results typically last between three and six months before a touch-up treatment is needed.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are different from Botox in that they smooth lines and wrinkles by adding volume under the skin. Many dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that attracts and binds water under the skin. Fillers can be used to smooth our nasolabial folds and marionette lines, as well as restore youthful volume to the cheeks and plump the lips. Results from fillers usually last 4-6 months, depending on the type of filler.

Which Option is Right for You?

The type of injectable treatment that is right for you will depend on the type of wrinkles you would like to treat. Dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that are caused by muscle contractions can be corrected with Botox, while wrinkles and lines caused by aging can be addressed with fillers. The first step to determining which treatment is right for you is with a consultation with a certified injector.
