What is the Radiesse® dermal filler?
Unlike hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, RADIESSE® dermal filler is made of Calcium Hydroxyapatite, which are small, smooth calcium spheres suspended in a water-based gel. Just like hyaluronic dermal fillers, RADIESSE® is bio-compatible and FDA-approved, and does not require allergy testing. It immediately adds volume and additionally encourages the growth of your own collagen and may provide long-lasting results. It is the preferred dermal filler of Dr. Reinertson at Bellevue’s Advanced Skin and Body Solutions.
What the Radiesse® dermal filler used for?
It is used for treating deep facial folds and wrinkles around the nose, mouth, and temples and it great for adding volume to the region surrounding the cheeks. It can also be beneficial for filling certain types of scars. It is also the natural choice for treating thinning and aged hands as the results may be long-lasting and immediately noticeable after treatment. RADIESSE® dermal filler is not suitable for lip pumping procedures.
How long do Radiesse treamtents take?
Typical treatments last approximately 30 minutes. For your comfort, we can also provide topical numbing cream to help reduce the discomfort of the injection. Please add 15 minutes to your appointment time if you would like to have topical numbing as part of your treatment. We offer this additional service free of charge as a courtesy to our Bellevue patients.
A unique quality of RADIESSE® is that the results may be immediate. In addition to providing volume upon the completion of the treatment, the unique calcium microspheres begin to encourage the growth of collagen in the treated areas. Slowly the microspheres will be reabsorbed by your body and your own collagen will remain in its place. Results may last for 1 year and in some patients, results may last up to 15 months.
What does Radiesse really do?
As skin ages, it loses collagen, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and visible loss of facial volume. With RADIESSE®, lost volume in deep folds and wrinkles is immediately restored. After the procedure, the greatest benefit of RADIESSE® begins its work. The RADIESSE particles work with your body’s fibroblasts, cells in your connective tissue that produces fibers including collagen. As the particles are naturally broken down by your body’s metabolic processes, the particles promote your body to naturally grow its own collagen. The photos below depict collagen formation at the initial injection and three months after the procedure.
Are Radiesse injections painful?
Dr. Reinertson mixes a small amount of numbing Lidocaine with the RADIESSE® before injecting. Using ice packs and a skilled hand she is able to make the RADIESSE® treatment very comfortable for her patients. Most patients feel a slight pinching or mild ache immediately post injection that usually goes away within a few minutes. Mild swelling and/or bruising are the most common side effects. If you are allergic to or sensitive to Lidocaine or Xylocaine, please inform our medical staff or Dr. Reinertson prior to your procedure. Your comfort and safety are our primary concern.
Common Side Effects of Radiesse
People react to the injection process differently. Common side effects are tenderness, bruising, bumps/lumps and swelling at the site of injection and typically last 2-7 days. Some patients experience very little bruising or swelling and are back to their normal activities immediately. Please note that side effects can last up to 2 weeks for some patients. This is a normal part of the healing process and will subside as your body acclimates to the injection.
How can I reduce bruising, swelling after filler treatment?
To reduce the side effects of Radiesse, you should stop taking certain medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen or fish oil one week before treatment to reduce the chance of inflammation. Also, taking Arnica Montana under the tongue may also reduce bruising and swelling. Our expert injectors recommend that you delay taking any blood thinning medication if you have a prescription.
